On August 29, 2022, we brought our 18-month-old daughter, Isla, to walk-in hours at our pediatrician's office. She had been pale, bruising easily, and spent all day at her first day of school very lethargic. After some quick lab work, we were sent to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City where they told us they suspected cancer. She was officially diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and was in surgery to place her port for treatment the very next day. Our brave girl has been battling Leukemia ever since and is scheduled to complete treatment in December of 2024.
This journey has been difficult for every member of our family but we also have been abundantly blessed by friends, family, coworkers, and local organizations. The idea for Isla Cares sparked very early on in Isla's treatment and has evolved over the past two years into what we are today: a family wanting to pay it forward to our community.
Dylan is an 11-year US Army Veteran and Katy is a Pre-K teacher. Isla is our youngest of three children and they are our whole world. We enjoy movie nights, walks with our pup around our neighborhood, and overly competitive family game nights.
Our mission at Isla Cares Foundation is to support and encourage children with cancer and their families through personalized care packages. We hope to lessen the burden this disease carries and bring some light to their darkest days.
